Over the Labor Day weekend, we made a trip up north to see Mackinac Island, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We stayed at an Airbnb in a seemingly unknown town of Bliss, which is about 20 minutes from Mackinaw City. The experience turned out to be a great one, and we learned a thing or two about the town.
The town of Bliss probably has a hundred or so people who live there. There is a grocery store, church, an old school building, and then there is a vast lush Polo field! Over the years, the town has become an annual venue for a polo tournament organized by Bliss Polo Club and owned by a Harbor Springs resident, and Georgia native, Mason Houghland Lampton. Mason started the club in the summer of 2010.
Our Airbnb was a 2nd floor loft above Bliss Grocery Store. A country general store that carries a bit of every thing one might need in these parts of the state. The store has a following. There are folks who drive 4 hours just to buy honey from this store. The owner of the store and the loft, is a good man who made sure we had the best experience possible.
3 nights were quiet, peaceful, and away from the hustle bustle of the city life. We mostly spent days away from the town, doing our excursions to upper peninsula, or Mackinac. However, the evenings back in the loft were always relaxing and moody to look forward to. Needless to say, an experience anyone should try, and for us worth coming back.
